This project is a community-driven, collaborative effort to develop a conceptual master plan for a county-wide trail in El Paso County. The goal is to develop a trail that will become a regional attraction that connects communities, celebrates El Paso’s history and culture, highlights the Rio Grande, promotes health and active living, and catalyzes economic development.
Who Is Organizing This Effort?
The Paso del Norte Health Foundation (Health Foundation) is partnering with the Institute for Healthy Living to provide funding and coordination for the project with leadership oversight and support from former Texas Department of Transportation Chairman Ted Houghton, El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar, and multiple representatives from the City of El Paso. The Paso del Norte Health Foundation leads, leverages and invests in initiatives, programs and policies that promote health and prevent disease in the Paso del Norte Region. The Institute for Healthy Living provides leadership through innovative and sustainable approaches to promote healthy eating and active living in the Paso del Norte Region. The Health Foundation has engaged two consultants – Sites Southwest and Alta Planning & Design – to develop the conceptual master plan.
Why Is This Project Important?
For residents to lead active lives, the physical environment must enable and encourage physical activity. Trails and outdoor recreation opportunities are an excellent way for people to get outdoors, exercise, and explore their neighborhoods. They also create important connections between amenities (parks, schools, businesses), can lead to economic development, and improve overall quality of life.
How Long Will this Project Take?
This project has a timeline of 9 months, from May 2017 to February 2018. During this time, the project team will lay the groundwork to move forward with a future County-wide trail by developing a master plan that details the nuts and bolts required to construct a future trail. After this, it will take several more years to complete segments of the trail as funding is available. See the project timeline page for more details.
How Can I Get Involved?
This project will be most successful with your active involvement. Over the course of the project, there will be several interactive community meetings to gather residents’ ideas. Your feedback to a community survey, by email, and comments to this website are also crucial to inform the direction of the conceptual trail master plan.
